Functionality supporting CM

Incomplete capability

  • Relevant IT systems do not support the organisation's needs in order to perform adequate CM processes and methods.

  • Being aware of necessary functionality to support CM processes and methods in general.

  • Particular skills to handle functionality in particular IT tools.

Performed capability

  • A substantial part of relevant IT systems supports the organisation's needs in order to perform CM processes and methods.

Managed capability

  • All relevant IT systems supports the organisation's needs in order to perform CM processes and methods.

The information that is under control in order to manage the configuration of a system is for most organisations distributed in serveral IT systems. Requirements data might be stored in a requirement management system, various documentation such as specifications, testreports, technical publications etc, might be documents in a document management system, Logistic analysis or RAM data might stored in particularly appropriate tools, etc.

Each IT system that contains information that is under formal control must have functionality that supports CM, such as:

  • Id and version for information content.

  • support for version history

  • Freezing content to establish baselines

  • check-in / check-out functionality

  • setting status for content to support a particular workflow (draft, released, ...)

These features must be adapted to support the agreed processes and methods for CM.
